Another Gun Control Effort by Dems: Now It’s the Newly Changed “Violence Against Women Act.”

You might ask yourself about the next gun control move of Democrats, since they’ve been so busy pushing all sort of ideas lately. Never fear, they’ve got more up their sleeves, and this one is a type of “slight of hand” trick…or how to twist the words to make gun control happen in a newly revamped bill called “The Violence Against Women Act,” according to the Washington Times.

violence against women act

They allowed the original Violence Against Women Act from 1994 to expire so they could bring in a “new” one they said was “better.” And if you love gun control, it fits right in.

They released their proposal last week, saying they’ll push for enhanced protections for victims of cyberstalking, allow tribal courts to pursue cases on their lands against non-Indians, expand the uses of grant money, and create new categories of people banned from legally purchasing firearms.

The gun provisions are likely to be among the biggest fights, along with long-running disputes over gender identity and how transgender women are treated under the law.

Democrats are aiming for a floor vote in April.

“We must meet our obligation to help stamp out domestic abuse, violence against women and girls, and sexual harassment, and provide victims and survivors with the resources to recover and seek justice,” said House Majority Leader Steny H. Hoyer, Maryland Democrat. [Washington Times]

So here comes the twist- if the GOP stands against the bill, Democrats will claim that Republicans are for violence against women. They will use the power of the press to claim many things- and as we have seen it will likely work.

Will this presidential election be the most important in American history?

The bill uses language to create a new class of people who can be denied the right to purchase firearms: those in a plain old “dating relationship.”

It “expands the denial of gun-purchasing rights to those accused of abuse in dating relationship. Currently the law denies firearms to those accused of abuse in a marriage, or couples who are divorced, live together or have a child together.”

Truthfully, yes there are some ‘dates’ that are extraordinarily abusive. There are also extraordinarily manipulative women who claim abuse when there was none. One of the sponsors of the bill, Rep Debbie Dingell, believes that’s the “boyfriend loophole.”

The VAWA, originally signed in 1994, normally provided funding and grants for various programs against Domestic Violence. The Democrats allowed it to expire in February rather than the normal “clean extension” of the programs. They did it specifically for a bargaining chip to gun control, but added a few other partisan programs such as protections for transgenders, according to The Hill.
