ANALYSIS: Virginia’s new governor is driving the left bonkers

Virginia Gov. Glenn Youngkin is driving the far left bonkers with his executive orders and the fact that he appears determined to keep his campaign promises.

A columnist at the Washington Post could not resist the temptation to liken Youngkin to Donald Trump, the former president liberals love to hate. He is already being sued by some parents over his ban on a school requirement to wear masks, and he is being accused of declaring “war on Black history” by banning the teaching of critical race theory.

What remains is for Youngkin to ignite the tempers of the gun prohibition lobby by calling for repeal of laws adopted two years ago under then-Gov. Ralph Northam and a Democrat majority in the Assembly. But that might come soon, as lawmakers are already reportedly working on legislation to repeal Northam’s regressive one-gun-per-month restriction, and restore state preemption.

Youngkin probably expects to be pilloried by the press, which has lately been attacking one of its own, former New York Times opinion editor Bari Weiss because she recently declared she is finished with the coronavirus pandemic panic.

Essentially, anyone who even hints at conservatism faces being savaged by the establishment press, and because Youngkin—like Donald Trump five years ago—was not really expected to defeat veteran political insider Terry McAuliffe, attacking Youngkin may become the new national pastime, now that Trump is no longer in the Oval Office.

On Youngkin’s first day in office, he started making good on campaign promises, all of them certain to infuriate northern Virginia liberals who have been used to getting their way. Immediately, the Washington Post opinion piece declared, “Youngkin is already going full Trumpist…” The far left, including media pundits, simply cannot let go of Trump. It is something of an obsession, while they seem to have quickly glossed over Joe Biden calling Fox News’ White House correspondent Peter Doocy a “stupid son-of-a-bitch” for having asked a question about the economy. Biden later personally called Doocy to insist it was “nothing personal, pal,” but a remark like that is viscerally personal, and Biden most likely does not consider Doocy, a second-generation Fox News fixture—his father, Steve Doocy, co-hosts the morning news program “Fox and Friends—as a “pal.”

So Youngkin better get used to being a whipping boy for the Beltway media, even if he succeeds in improving the Virginia economy, healing the education system and restoring gun rights in the Commonwealth.
