Two Chinese nationals were arrested on Tuesday, June 3, for attempting to smuggle a dangerous pathogen known as a potential “agroterrorism” agent. Yunqing Jian, a researcher at the University of Michigan and her boyfriend, Zunyong Liu, were both charged with “conspiracy, smuggling goods into the United States, false statements, and visa fraud.” After the investigation, it will be determined whether a trial will be conducted, or expulsion from the USA.
The couple are accused of smuggling a fungus called Fusarium graminearum, which scientific literature classifies as a “potential agroterrorism weapon,” according to the Justice Department. Federal prosecutors note the noxious fungus causes “head blight,” a disease of wheat, barley, maize, and rice, and “is responsible for billions of dollars in economic losses worldwide each year.”Â
The Justice Department also says fusarium graminearum’s toxins cause vomiting, liver damage, and “reproductive defects in humans and livestock.”Â
According to the criminal complaint, Jian, 33, allegedly received Chinese government funding for her work on the pathogen in China.Â
Federal prosecutors say Jian’s electronics contain information “describing her membership in and loyalty to the Chinese Communist Party.” Fox
If the fungus was released, the damage to America’s farmland would be catastrophic both for crops and livestock…including humans. China’s propensity to work with deadly pathogens is a huge reason for the Trump administration to revoke any Chinese visas. The Chinese Communists are involved in all who come to this country. “Agroterrorism” is likely only the tip of the proverbial iceberg.
