In a video posted to Facebook, a Louisiana police officer says workers with Red Cross told him to stop praying with people at a flood shelter.

The video, which you can see below, has gone viral with well over 500,000 views:

I do have one bone to pick – if it’s a shelter being offered by the Red Cross, a private agency, you don’t have Constitutional rights to do whatever you want in their space. It’s not against the First Amendment, because it’s their space. I think it’s awful that they would tell him to stop praying with the flood victims, but technically it’s not a Constitutional freedom of speech or freedom of religion issue.

Will this presidential election be the most important in American history?

I get his argument, but this indicates just how far we’ve come as a country and a society.  It used to be that prayer in times like these was not only welcome, it was pretty much expected and desired.

But it seems that the left has effectively driven God and Jesus Christ out of the public square.

Writing in his classic work, “Democracy in America,” Alexis de Tocqueville noted:

I sought for the key to the greatness and genius of America in her harbors…; in her fertile fields and boundless forests; in her rich mines and vast world commerce; in her public school system and institutions of learning. I sought for it in her democratic Congress and in her matchless Constitution.

Not until I went into the churches of America and heard her pulpits flame with righteousness did I understand the secret of her genius and power.

America is great because America is good, and if America ever ceases to be good, America will cease to be great.

“Christianity is the companion of liberty in all its conflicts — the cradle of its infancy, and the divine source of its claims,” he added.

As we’ve seen over the last few years, America as a whole is no longer what de Tocqueville might call “good.”  As a nation, we’ve replaced God with something else — namely, ourselves and our own selfish desires.

And this is the result.

There’s also one other observation that should be made here — What, in the name of Sam Hill, inspired the “cross” in “Red Cross?”

If the Red Cross is going to reject the cross, then maybe they should change their name to something more appropriate — like the Red Hammer and Sickle…
