Tim Kaine falsely claims conservative news group funded fake Trump-Russia dossier

During an appearance on CNN, Sen. Tim Kaine, D-Va., falsely claimed the Washington Free Beacon funded the fake salacious Trump-Russia dossier, the Daily Caller reported on Tuesday.

“Do you see these things as equivalent–of the Hillary campaign looking for dirt from Russians and Russians offering dirt to the Trump campaign?” CNN anchor Alisyn Camerota asked Kaine.

“If you’re asking about the dossier, that was funded by a conservative, online news publication–the Washington Free Beacon,” Kaine said.

“At first, then the Hillary campaign, right?” Camerota asked.

Will this presidential election be the most important in American history?

“Let me finish — and they hired a firm with a British secret service agent,” Kaine resonded.

“And when they decided to drop it, apparently we now know that some of the funds that were paid to continue the investigation were paid for by the Clinton campaign. But we all do oppo research. Every candidate does oppo research on their opponent. You can ask any candidate for office. They do it. And hiring a firm to do oppo research is pretty common practice. That’s not any evidence of collusion. That’s what done,” he added.

Kaine continued to deflect, according to a transcript at Real Clear Politics: “Let’s all Democrats and Republicans that Director Mueller will have the complete latitude and resources to get to the bottom of this. If the president will say that and… congressional Democrats say that, then the nation will be well served.”

Here’s video of his comments:

Not so fast, the Daily Caller said:

While the Free Beacon paid Fusion GPS for standard opposition research, Fusion GPS did not contract with ex-British agent Christopher Steele until after the conservative news outlet stopped paying. The creation of the dossier also did not occur until the Free Beacon was out of the equation. Thus, the DNC and the Clinton campaign were solely responsible for funding the creation of the dossier.
