Did Syrian refugees rape a young girl at knifepoint in Idaho?

rape investigationEarlier this month, KMVT reported that a sexual assault “possibly occurred” near the Fawnbrook Apartments in Twin Falls, Idaho.  The assault reportedly took place on June 2 and Twin Falls County Prosecutor Grant Loebs said there will be no charges filed in the case until the police investigation is complete.

One blog reported:

Here are the details as reported by a Twin Falls resident-

The little girl being born very premature she is less developed for her age.

Will this presidential election be the most important in American history?

The little girl was at the FAWNBROOK apartment buildings where both her parents and grandmother reside.  She was playing in between those two apartment units when 3 boys (from 2 Syrian refugee families, ages 8, 10, 13)  pulled a knife on her, held it to her throat, forced her into the laundry unit, stripped her naked, raped, and urinated on her.  The 13 year old “coached” the younger boys as he videoed. Due to age restraint the boys could not ejaculate but did urinate on her.

THE VICTIM’S GRANDMOTHER DISCOVERED THE SITUATION AND IMMEDIATELY CALLED THE VICTIM’S MOTHER WHO CALLED TWIN FALLS POLICE DEPARTMENT.

Infowars added: “The perpetrators were three Syrian youths aged 8, 10 and 13, with the oldest boy directing the assault.”

The report also said that “around 50 Syrian ‘refugees’ are reportedly housed at the Fawnbrook site.”

But, Betsy Z. Russell reported at the Spokesman Review, that story is false:

A story that’s circulating on social media and anti-Muslim and conspiracy-oriented websites is falsely claiming that three young Syrian refugees raped a young girl at knifepoint at an apartment complex in Twin Falls that supposedly is the site where about 50 Syrian refugees had been resettled – when in fact, no Syrian refugees have been resettled to Twin Falls.

The story also charges that police failed to respond to the alleged incident in a timely fashion, which local authorities also say is false.

“There was no gang rape, there was no Syrian involvement, there were no Syrian refugees involved, there was no knife used, there was no inactivity by the police,” said Twin Falls County Prosecutor Grant Loebs. “I’m looking at the Drudge Report headline: ‘Syrian Refugees Rape Little Girl at Knifepoint in Idaho’ – all false.”

The story, pushed by local anti-refugee activists who spoke out at a recent Twin Falls City Council Meeting, stems from a June 2 incident between four children at a low-income apartment complex in Twin Falls. Two older boys, 10 and 14, boys allegedly incited a 7-year-old boy to act inappropriately with a 5-year-old girl, in a laundry room at the complex.

Moreover, Russell said, there are 35 Syrian refugees in Idaho, and they’re all in Boise.

Here’s video of a somewhat contentious city council meeting where residents want answers:

So, what, exactly, happened?

According to KTVB:

Reports that the boys are Syrian are false, Loebs said. He said there is no evidence that the alleged sexual assault happened at knifepoint and said any online report that says this was a gang rape is false.

However, he said three boys who are not Americans by birth were involved in the reported sexual assault of a 5-year-old girl on June 2 at the Fawnbrook Apartments.

Loebs said the boys – ages 7, 10 and 14 – all allegedly participated in the assault. Only one, however, is suspected of having physical contact with the girl.

The two older boys are from the Sudan in Africa, Loebs said, and the youngest is from Iraq. Loebs said he doesn’t believe they are recent refugees, but he said he doesn’t know when or how they came to the U.S.

The 10-year-old and the 14-year-old were taken into custody on Friday, Loebs said. They were taken into custody a day after the prosecutor’s office got the case and filed charges.

So it appears that the alleged perpetrators are migrants, just not from Syria…

There’s enough outrage here to make everyone’s head explode.

It seems that some of the initial details reported may have been incorrect, and the media is right to set the record straight, but it’s outrageous to suggest that it’s bigoted to be upset over news that a little girl was assaulted by migrants.
