Nothing says Religion of Peace like a Muslim threatening to rape a woman. Perhaps the exclamation point at the end of the fracas would be that the threat of first degree sexual assault was made on live television.

And that’s exactly what happened on one of Pakistan’s top rated talk show’s 10PM with Nadia Mirza. As reported by the Paris-based Agence France-Presse via Australia’s 9News, and also NDTV.com of India, both on June 15, 2016, Mirza was hosting a panel discussion regarding the South Asian nation’s slow creep into the 21st century when tempers flared. But wait, there’s more.

As it turns out, while Pakistan’s secular law has long since outlawed the centuries old and Shari’a Law approved practice of “honor killing”. The country’s Islamic leaders have finally declared a fatwa (religious ruling) against husbands, fathers, brothers and uncles from murdering their wives, mothers, sisters and nieces in order to preserve the family honor.

But unfortunately for Pakistan’s wives, mothers, sisters and nieces, there are some very influential people who want nothing to do with the ban. Case in point would be one of panelists, Mullah Hafiz Hamdullah. But wait, there’s more.

Not only does Hamdullah bear the official theological title of Mullah (Islamic scholar and/or leader), but he’s also officially known as Senator Hamdullah. That’s right, Hamdullah is a member of the Pakistani Senate. He also happens to be a member of the Jamiat Ulema-e-Isla Fazal (JUI-F) political party.

To say that the JUI-F is politically and theologically conservative would be an understatement. Opponents of the group have often accused them of wanting the country to ditch Western-style in favor of a Taliban-style theocracy. Of course, their government would be based on a fundamentalist interpretation of Shari’a Law.

And it was on Mirza’s talk show where the senator/mullah blew his top while engaged in debate with one of the country’s leading women’s rights advocates, Marvi Sarmad. While no transcripts from Urdu to English has been released, but the body language and the tones of voice give a fairly good idea of exactly where the conversation was going (see video).

It was at the end of the show that Hamdullah had obviously had enough of Sarmad actually defending herself and every possible victim of honor killing. As seen on the video, the show’s producers had to bleep-out more than a few of the Muslim holy man’s abusive insults.

But Sarmad did take to her Facebook to explain the incident, saying: “He started abusing me with the worst possible expletives. (He) called me a whore and said ‘tumhaari shalwaar utaar dooN ga aur tumhaari maaN ki bhi’.” This loosely translates to “I will strip off your dress and will do the same to your mother too”.

And the threat was caught on video. For her part, Sarmad has lodged a formal complaint with the police, who have since booked Hamdullah on charges pending.
