Westland, Michigan – Fox2 reported that Westland is known as an “All American City.” But someone inside city government didn’t like “American” anything, after an unidentified city worker uprooted 24 American flags from a local business owner’s property and hauled them away.
For the last 30 years, Ken Dabelstein has put Old Glory around the edge of his property on holidays like Memorial Day in honor of those who have made the ultimate sacrifice. He’s been conducting his business in Westland for 42 years. Ken is 73 years old.

City worker or someone else?
This year a woman who claimed to be from the city (and refused to give him her card) showed up, accusing him of putting up “signage.” She yanked out every one of the 24 flags and pitched them in the back of her truck.
Customers tried to snatch them out of her hand, and Mr. Dabelstein tried to chase her, but he is handicapped.
She disappeared with his flags.
“She pulled the flags out and wouldn’t give me her card, She pulled the flags out, customers tried to grab them out of her hand. She wouldn’t give it to them. She took the flags and literally threw them in the back of her truck.” Ken Dabelstein
Stranger to the rescue
Ken posted a sign on his property, and then on a Facebook post alerting the community to what happened. That caught the attention of a city council member AND Mayor William Wild, both of whom apologized.
City council member Kevin Coleman said it was most likely a misunderstanding, and apologized to Mr. Dabelstein.
But the city could not find the stolen flags. Mr. Dabelstein said he had more and would put them out the next day. He gives the flags away to people who want them.
According to Starnes, a stranger brought more flags early Friday morning and restored Ken’s display. So when he awakened, there was Old Glory, once again flying free in the “All American City” of Westland.
