ISIS in America; again, threat of ‘suitcase nukes’ looms

While the United Kingdom is set to vote if the island nation will authorize air strikes against the ISIS terrorists in Syria, the notion of the same terrorists obtaining nuclear weapons has again reared its ugly head. As reported by Samuel Hayes of the new media North Star National on Nov. 5, 2015, Britain’s parliament is set to vote on whether or not the attack aircraft of the Royal Air Force and Royal Navy will be engaging the Islamic jihadists.

In the meantime, Mrutyuanjai Mishra of the Times of India notes on Dec. 4, 2015 of the possibility of the same global jihadists possibly obtaining nuclear weapons.

Hayes also notes that Barack Obama has already drawn a red line detailing the circumstances he would order US ground troops into Syria. Ominously, it just so happens to be if the ISIS jihadists obtained nukes. As reported, “in November 2014 Obama pledged that the sort of circumstance where USA troops might be deployed on the ground were, ‘If we discovered that ISIL had gotten possession of a nuclear weapon, and we had to run an operation to get it out of their hands.'”

Catherine Herridge of Fox News reported just days before (Nov. 26, 2015) the San Bernadino Massacre that the FBI was tracking upwards of 1,000 cases of ISIS already in the United States. As noted by Herridge, “Fox News has learned at least 48 ISIS suspects are considered so high risk that the FBI is using its elite tracking squads known as the mobile surveillance teams or MST to track them domestically.”

No longer a question of if, or even a case of those who are “inspired by” or covert supporters of. Simply put – ISIS is already in America. As The Times of India’s Mishra rhetorically asked, “Who are more dangerous; the bearded jihadi fighters with assault weapons driving pick up trucks in Syria, or the mullahs, with connections to the military in Pakistan who have nuclear weapons?”

It was reported four and a half months before the September 11th attacks by World Net Daily that a little known terrorist by the name of Usama bin Laden was the leader of an equally little known organization named al-Qaeda had raided former Soviet Army nuclear weapons sites and acquired upwards of 20 nuclear devices popularly known as “suitcase nukes” or better known in the US Armed Forces as Special Atomic Demolition Munitions (SADM), or more simply – backpack nukes. SADMs were designed to be a tactical weapon for Special Forces to be used against enemy targets comparable to the tightly compact heart of Tokyo or London, Australia’s Sydney Harbour Bridge, or any of the massive oil refinery complexes on the Texas or New Jersey coasts.

According to NuclearWeaponArchive.org, the long since antiquated W-54 warhead weighs in at a mere 50 pounds while still packing an explosive yield of .25 kT (kilotons), the equivalent of 250 tons or half a million pounds of TNT. In comparison, it’s common for the average Marine to carry greater than an eighty pound load when involved in combat operations.

But strapping a W-54 to the back of any given fairly physically fit man isn’t the end all when it comes to portable nuclear devices. Easily carried by a 4 man team, the W-62 warhead weighs in at 253 pounds. Packing the explosive punch of 170 kT (kilotons), equal to that of 170,000 tons of TNT, a detonated W-62 translates into 340 million pounds of explosive force.

The still active W-88 warhead weighs in at 800 pounds and has a yield of 475 kT. The equivalent of 475,000 tons of TNT which translates to 950 million pounds of the explosive. This particular warhead equals almost a billion pounds of TNT, and is easily transportable in a large rental truck that could be acquired in any American city or town. In perspective, the atomic bomb “Little Boy” that was dropped on Hiroshima had a 16 kT yield.
