Handel wins Georgia 6th Congressional District election

Today is the day that voters will decide who wins the hard-fought special election between Republican Karen Handel and Liberal Democrat, Jon Ossoff to replace Tom Price in Georgia’s 6th Congressional District and as of 7:56pm Eastern time, the polls have officially closed.

Mark Rountree of Landmark Communications, a full-service political advertising and consulting firm based in metro Atlanta has been following the election news and results.

Will this presidential election be the most important in American history?

6:00pm: Democratic-leaning precinct for you:

There were 456 early voters in SS03, and 160 voted today in-precinct as of noon. That’s just over 616 as of noon. There are 1502 registered voters there, and 983 voted in the presidential election (Trump took about 44% of the vote there). It would appear, therefore, that in this blended political precinct, where Dems have an edge, that it’s going to end *under* presidential level voting. (Again, we will see).

First Democratic precinct: JC01 went only 40% for Trump, 56% for Hillary Clinton. Trump took 40% of JC01. A report just came in that 629 votes were cast as of 5 pm in JC01. When combined with the 1757 who voted early, that’s a 5 PM total 2,386 voters.

However, this is a massive precinct by North Fulton county standards. There were 3,312 were cast in the general election. Turnout will apparently not hit Presidential level in JC01. This report definitely hurts Ossoff, since only 2/3rds of the vote has returned from presidential level as of 5 PM. Maybe it gets to 80% in the end, who knows… but this is an interesting indicator.

7:00pm: Chestnut Elementary in DeKalb had 556 early voters and 456 vote as of 6 PM today. Trump got drummed there and only got 29.6%. In the presidential election there were 1409 votes cast and there are 2,360 registered voters. Based on this, it appears turnout may fall short of presidential level voting, since another 400 would be needed to get to presidential level voting, with only 1 hour to go, and 556 is the number over the preceding 11 hours.

8:00pm: JC7 is a johns creek precinct that performed 44.6% for trump. There were 1482 early votes and around 675 that will have voted today by 7 PM for AROUND a final total of 2155. There were 2700 presidential voters. It came through with *around* 80% of presidential level turnout.

8:24pm: Been asked a few times: the vote that have been reported are the walk-and votes. Not the mail-in votes. With Cobb Fulton and DeKalb in, Ossoff leads but not by a big margin. The Democrats believe that he will make up some reasonable ground on the mail in ballots. And he probably will… But I would say Karen Handel is in the driver’s seat now for sure.
