Feds investigating voter guides dumped in Berkeley recycling bin
On Wednesday, KTVU reported that a federal investigation is underway after a man in Berkeley, California, discovered some 100 voter guides dumped in a recycling bin.
According to KTVU:
Scott Wheeler says he was walking along where he lives on Walnut Street when he found the pamphlets inside a recycling bin.
“They were just sitting there on top. I stopped what I was doing with the eggs,” says Wheeler. He says he had been collecting egg cartons.
Will this presidential election be the most important in American history?
Wheeler counted 96 of them addressed to people in various parts of Berkeley.
He described his reaction as, “Pretty surprised and disturbed and it may even be a crime.”
Wheeler says he called police, the U.S. Postal Inspector, the Alameda County Registrar of Voters and KTVU News to report his find.
Keep in mind these weren’t actual ballots, but pamphlets designed to inform voters of the candidates and issues on the ballot.
Nevertheless, Wheeler was rightly concerned.
“It’s really serious. This is one of the most important elections in our lifetime. I want to know if this goes deeper,” he said.
Here’s a video report, courtesy of KTVU:
Wheeler, who says he has been a permanent mail-in voter for years, also learned he had been recently de-activated as a registered voter.
KTVU said: “He says election officials removed him when a permanent mail in voter card was sent to Wheeler but the card was returned as undeliverable.”
The Postal Service is investigating both issues, but the Alameda County Registrar of Voters says the discarded guides is an isolated incident.
“As soon as they found those pamphlets they were immediately delivered to our voters so they’ve received their materials and they’re able to vote,” Tim Dupuis, Alameda County’s registrar of voters, said.
