Detroit Police Chief: ‘If more citizens were armed, criminals would think twice about attacking them’
The Detroit News reported on Thursday Detroit Police Chief James Craig said, “If more citizens were armed, criminals would think twice about attacking them.” Th
This is an unusual mindset for urban police chiefs because a vast majority of them in favor of gun control.
James held a press conference at police headquarters where he addressed the topic of gun ownership. He said, “when we look at the good community members who have concealed weapons permits, the likelihood they’ll shoot is based on a lack of confidence in this police department.”
He further added he believes gun owners make Detroit citizens feel safer. Perhaps this can be attributed to the reported seven percent drop in violent crime in 2013 in the Detroit area.
Will this presidential election be the most important in American history?
Craig only started believing in legal gun owners being able to deter crime in 2009 when he became the police chief while living in Maine. He also said, “coming from California (Craig was on the Los Angeles police force for 28 years), where it takes an act of Congress to get a concealed weapon permit, I got to Maine, where they give out lots of CCWs (carrying concealed weapon permits), and I had a stack of CCW permits I was denying; that was my orientation.”
“I changed my orientation real quick. Maine is one of the safest places in America. Clearly, suspects knew that good Americans were armed.” The Detroit News reports that Robyn Thomas, director of the the Law Center to Prevent Gun Violence in San Francisco, disagrees with Craig.
Thomas said, “I think at its core, his position is an emotional one, based on the idea that people feel safer when they have guns. But studies have shown more guns don’t deter crime,” Thomas said. “There’s no research that shows guns make anyone safer, and it does show that, the more guns in any situation, the higher the likelihood of them harming either the owner, or people who have access to them.”
Obviously those who are against the Second Amendment would have Americans believe that gun owners are dangerous and unstable maniacs who want our nation to return to the days of the wild west. The truth of the matter is that the only thing standing between us and becoming a victim is being able to legally carry firearms.
We can usually expect those against gun ownership to say and do whatever they have to in order to demonize those who legally carry firearms. Gun grabbers always justify confiscation of guns from law-abiding citizens by basically any means necessary. Those who oppose concealed carry say some ridiculous things, especially after a tragedy where guns have been involved and lives have been lost.
Those who oppose citizens in our nation from carrying guns say some pretty stupid things. News Busters reported Democratic New York Congressman Jerrold Nadler had the following to say about gun owners:
We have a lobby, the leadership of the NRA, who function as enablers of mass murder. And that’s what they are. They’re enablers of mass murder.
Then we have a president who can’t make up his mind exactly where he stands on the whole gun ownership issue. The rhetoric he spews puts him all “over the map on this issue.” There is only one thing we need to keep in mind concerning Obama and guns, don’t listen to what he says, but rather watch what he does.
The National Review Online reported that , “in 1996 Obama supported a ban on handguns and on the sale of ALL semiautomatic guns in 1998. The ban on semiautomatic guns would have included virtually all of the guns sold here in America. He advocated banning guns within a five mile radius of a school or park. He has also worked on other ways to ban guns.”
