Cali Gov Jerry Brown Phases Out Middle Class Scholarships, Increased Funds for Illegals

Faced with a deficit of $1.9 Billion, Gov Jerry Brown and the liberal-infested government of California have decided to phase out middle class scholarships, leaving only the entitlement programs for their high population of undocumented immigrants, who have the “greatest financial need.”

“We believe that gradually phasing out the Middle Class Scholarship Program will allow us to continue to maintain the Cal Grant entitlement program that’s focused on those students with the greatest financial need.” H.D. Palmer, CA State Finance Department spokesman to the LA Times

The middle class scholarship program assisted families who make $156,000 or less with 40% of the cost of college.

So let’s get this straight: they’re increasing scholarships for their population of undocumented immigrants (illegals) and dumping the ones for the middle class. They seem to think middle class students shouldn’t be asking for scholarships, which is pure bunk.

Will this presidential election be the most important in American history?

“It’s pitting groups of students against each other. There’s an idea that middle-class students don’t deserve to be asking for aid and don’t need it, but from what I’ve seen, people could not be more wrong about that.” Rafi Sands, UCLA student body leader to the LA Times.

Hard working middle class families will now have to figure out how to send their kids to college without any scholarship assistance, unless they can find one from a corporation, private school, or go out of state. There are private scholarships, but certainly not enough to go around all middle class families, and the competition is extremely tight.

The Governor’s proposed budget states in part, “Given the state’s overall financial condition, to continue the Administration’s support for long-term stable growth in funding for the UC and the CSU, and to maintain the broad Cal Grant entitlement for the state’s neediest students, the Budget proposes a phase-out of the Middle Class Scholarship Program.”

When California implemented the Dream Act, it cut its own throat. Undocumented and nonresident students became eligible for literally millions of dollars in state financial aid. The costs of the program are expected to reach $88.6 Billion in fiscal year 2017-2018, according to Campus Reform.

Students wishing to remain in California to go to school are disappointed, and many are having to apply to out of state schools that have financial aid packages. Some of the universities are trying to find ways to fix the situation so that they don’t lose the middle class students, but it’s an uphill battle.

California has dramatically changed its educational landscape and trashed the hard working families that once were the backbone of the state.
