Bernie Sanders, Socialism, and Fidel Castro – video

Bernie Sanders, Socialism, and Fidel Castro – video

Let’s have a little chat about Bernie Sanders’ view of the world through socialist lenses and see if we can come up with the truth.

“To me, democratic socialism means democracy. It means creating a government that represents all of us, not just the wealthiest people in the country.” Bernie Sanders

But Bernie’s definition of “democratic socialism” isn’t the true definition of socialism. So let’s start there: According to Wikipedia, “Democratic socialism is a political ideology advocating a democratic political system alongside a socialist economic system, involving a combination of political democracy with social ownership of the means of production.”

You cannot mix the two without serious consequences to the people

Will this presidential election be the most important in American history?

But true Socialism is akin to Communism in reality and practice. First, the definition of Communism: a political theory derived from Karl Marx, advocating class war and leading to a society in which all property is publicly owned and each person works and is paid according to their abilities and needs.”

Now Socialism: a political and economic theory of social organization that advocates that the means of production, distribution, and exchange should be owned or regulated by the community as a whole.”

Do you see the problem? BOTH political views advocate “public” or “society” or “community” ownership…which NEVER works in practice.

Let’s take a look at Bernie’s favorite example from a video in 1985: Fidel Castro’s Cuba

Now let’s go back and really pay attention to what happened in Cuba. Prior to Fidel Castro, Cuba was a thriving nation, modern, exciting, full of promise. People had their own property and were able to have material things of their own. Havana was considered a “tropical playground.”

Bernie claims Castro “educated kids, gave them healthcare, and totally transformed the society.”  He definitely did that.

Results of Castro:

All property became state-owned and controlled. People lost land, farms, businesses.  They now had to work menial, low paying jobs, or do whatever it took to become a friend of the state – including turn in their neighbors and friends for ‘egregious’ offenses like wanting to come to the USA.

And the cities decayed. The food lines grew long. The people fell into abject poverty. And that’s where it sits today.

Michael J. Totten wrote about Havana, Cuba in the World Affairs Journal,

Roofs have collapsed. Balcony doors hang not vertically but at angles, allowing passersby to see inside homes where the interior paint is just as peeled as it is on the outside. I could even see inside some people’s homes through gashes in exterior walls. The weight of rain water knocks whole buildings down as if they were dynamited.

When your roof caves in, you can’t just call a guy and have him come over and fix it. You have to wait for the government.

You will wait a long time.

And Mr. Totten is correct- you will wait a long time for everything: repairs, medical, food. THIS is the reality of socialism/communism.  Friends who live in socialist countries – even if they aren’t fully communist yet, must get up very early every day just to get bread. If they do not, there might not be any left.

Healthcare is universal alright – but if you think waiting for the VA is deadly, try waiting for years if you need surgery and dying before you ever get in. THAT is the reality of socialism. I have a friend in Australia who is waiting for simple carpal tunnel surgery – she says the wait will be at least 2 years.

Bernie Sanders is WRONG for America.
