‘Amnesty Don’: Internet explodes after reports that Trump, Schumer, Pelosi reach DACA amnesty deal

On Wednesday, reports broke that President Trump reached a deal with Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer, D-N.Y., and House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi, D-Calif., that would give amnesty to some 800,000 illegal immigrants.  Additionally, the two Democrats indicated there would be no border wall in the deal.  If true, it would mean the president caved on two of his biggest campaign promises.

According to Breitbart:

In a meeting with establishment politicians from the Problem Solvers Caucus and the Blue Dog Coalition, President Trump signaled a full-fledged cave on the issue of giving amnesty to nearly 800,000 illegal aliens currently protected by an Obama-created executive immigration program.

Since Attorney General Jeff Sessions announced the ultimate end to the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) program, under which  hundreds of thousands of illegal aliens were given work permits and temporary protected status, Trump has remained unclear on whether he would stick to his anti-amnesty campaign promises or cave to the political establishment.

Will this presidential election be the most important in American history?

At his White House meeting with moderates, according to The Hill, Trump is set to choose a legislative deal that quickly legalizes the nearly 800,000 illegal aliens on DACA, without getting any pro-American immigration reforms in return:

Indeed, said Rep. Henry Cuellar (D-Texas), the president is already getting impatient.

“He says, ‘Oh, DACA, we want to move on this quick, we don’t want to wait six months,’” Cuellar said after the meeting. “He said, ‘It’s already been six days and nothing’s happened.’”

Cuellar said Trump didn’t propose a timeline, but voiced concerns that waiting until the March 5 deadline grows closer would only put a spotlight on the issue and make it more difficult for Congress to act. The president, Cuellar said, wants to move “when people are not expecting it.”

“He said, ‘We don’t have to tie a wall to this. We can put a wall [in another bill],’” Cuellar said, emphasizing that other border enforcement measures would likely be included.

After the meeting, the two Democrats released the following:

Worse yet, Breitbart said that House Speaker Paul Ryan would probably not rule out a plan to give amnesty to 800,000 DACA recipients.

The Associated Press tweeted:

News of the apparent cave blew up the Internet as the hastag #AmnestyDon began trending.

One person expressed hope that Trump would reverse course after seeing the reaction from supporters:

But, White House Press Secretary Sarah Huckabee Sanders sent out a tweet after Pelosi and Schumer’s statement, which said: “While DACA and border security were both discussed, excluding the wall was certainly not agreed to.”

Additionally, Wall Street Journal reporter Rebecca Ballhaus said that White House legislative affairs director Marc Short called the Democrats’ statement “misleading.”

How bad is the situation?  Rep. Steve King, R-Iowa, said that if the reported cave is true, the damage to Trump’s base is irreparable:

According to Breitbart:

King, a long-time immigration hawk, told Breitbart News Washington political editor Matt Boyle that an amnesty move like the one onto which Trump reportedly signed Wednesday was “Republican suicide.” That assessment came just after Attorney General Jeff Sessions announced the administration’s decision to keep a major election campaign promise and phase out President Barack Obama’s Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) executive order. “It was a clear campaign promise,” King said at the time, referring to an immediate end to the program upon Trump’s taking office.

Instead, after allowing DACA to trod on in its likely unconstitutional limbo for nine months, Trump finally rescinded the executive amnesty with a graceful phase out that potentially gives the illegals covered under it two and half more years of protection. Texas and eight other states dropped their already fruitful lawsuits seeking to have DACA overturned, only because of this promise.

Sean Hannity, one of Trump’s staunchest supporters, warned that if the president gives in to the Democrats, “it’s over.”

He also compared it to the promise that did in former President George H.W. Bush:

Indeed, Republicans have failed to keep their promises, as we’ve seen time and again.  If the president gives Democrats what they want on amnesty and the border wall, he will quite likely find himself standing alone in 2020.
