School forbids students to mourn classmate who died of cancer

Caitlyn JacksonIf you thought school policies couldn’t get any sillier than suspending a 7-year-old for biting a toaster pastry into the shape of a gun, then you haven’t heard the latest lunacy, which occurred on Monday at a Michigan middle school. CBS affiliate WWMT has the report:

A Battle Creek community is outraged after they say they couldn’t properly honor a young girl who recently lost her battle with leukemia.

12-year-old Caitlyn Jackson died Saturday night after battling cancer for four years. Caitlyn’s friends honored her at Lakeview Middle School Monday by creating T-shirts with her name on them.

But grief counselors told them to cover up because of a policy that prohibits student memorials.

Caitlyn’s family, needless to say, was beside themselves. Melinda Jackson, the grieving mother, is interviewed in the video clip found here.

I didn’t think my heart could break anymore. Not only did they do that, they tore a piece of my heart out, rolled it up, threw it on the floor and stomped on it.

The Lakeview School District declined an on-camera interview but released a statement, which is increasingly becoming the refuge of cowards who hide behind their own officious dicta. The statement, which contains the de rigueur grammatical error, reads in part:

We sincerely regret that our actions caused additional stress for Caitlyn’s family and friends. The Jackson’s [sic] spent time with district staff … and as a result of our conversations, the district has committed to reviewing the crisis management plan that guides us in these situations and students will be allowed to wear clothing bearing Caitlyn’s name.

The (no apostrophe needed when it is pluralized) hold a candlelight vigil at their home Sunday night.
